Passengers and residents in Llandrindod Wells, Powys, will soon benefit from a safer, more reliable level crossing as Network Rail confirms it will fully renew the crossing’s equipment.

The equipment that makes up the crossing has come to the end of its natural life and will now be replaced to improve reliability and increase the safety of passengers and the general public as part of the company’s Railway Upgrade Plan to provide a bigger, better, more reliable railway.

Network Rail and Powys County Council discussed the future of the crossing with members of the public at a public drop-in event last Thursday (14 July) hosted at Celf O Gwmpas in Llandrindod Wells.

Andrew Bound, Route Level Crossing Manager for Network Rail Wales said: “The Llandrindod Wells level crossing infrastructure is approaching the end of its life and we are obliged by the rail regulator to consider all options, including closure, whenever a level crossing is due for renewal. We are always seeking to reduce risk and improve safety at level crossings.

“It was clear from the public event hosted last week that the local community is overwhelmingly in favour of the crossing remaining open and being renewed. Following this feedback we plan to carry out a full renewal of the crossing’s equipment to improve the reliability and increase the safety of passengers and the general public.

“We would like to thank the members of the community who attended the event and who provided us with feedback.”

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
