The lift to platforms 1 and 2 will be closed for maintenance for two weeks in May.

From Tuesday 6 – Tuesday 20 May, passengers who need step-free access to trains travelling southbound at Stockport are advised to plan their journeys in advance.

£46k is being invested at the station to make step-free access more reliable for passengers.

The work involves replacing the doors to the lift and replacing some of the equipment inside the lift shaft. The lift is around 20 years old, and this work will help to keep them reliable for years to come.

Passengers who need step-free access at Stockport to southbound destinations such as London Euston, Stoke-on-Trent and Macclesfield, are advised to start their journey at Manchester Piccadilly. Accessible taxis can be arranged from both Piccadilly to Stockport and Stockport to Piccadilly.

Phil James, Network Rail’s North West route director, said: “I am very sorry to our passengers who will be disrupted by this essential lift maintenance.

“Making sure our lifts are in good working order is critical to creating inclusive railway where everyone can travel with ease.

“If you need step-free access to travel between 6-20 May, I’d advise you to start your journey at Manchester Piccadilly, or allow more time to travel as part of your journey will be by an accessible taxi.”

Network Rail is working with Avanti West Coast, who manages Stockport station, on sharing travel advice with passengers during the work.

Lisa Magee, Avanti West Coast station manager at Stockport, said: “We’re working with Network Rail and industry partners to help customers as the works to maintain the lifts at Stockport station take place. As always, our teams will be on hand to help customers travelling to and from Stockport during this time but we strongly recommend customers plan ahead, check before they travel and leave extra time for their journey. We would like to thank customers for their patience while Network Rail undertake this essential work.”

Passengers can find more information about assisted travel on the National Rail webpage.

Notes to Editors

There will be no accessible route to platforms 1 and 2 between 6 – 20 May. Customers travelling south towards London are advised to travel to Manchester Piccadilly station for step-free access. Travel to or from Manchester Piccadilly can be arranged by the Avanti West Coast team.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
