Southern stations launch rail activity 'passbook' aimed at making travel as fun as possible for 5-9 year olds as the holidays start

Network Rail stations across the south are welcoming children back to the railway with a special activity book so that they can stay engaged and entertained on their journeys.

The Junior Rail Passbook is bursting with activities around railway stations to encourage families to get out and about on the rail network this summer, with some fun scavenger hunts and other activities to complete.

From an animal safari at Waterloo to a treasure hunt at London Bridge, there is an activity for each of the seven managed stations within the region. Passbook holders will also be able to collect a station stamp from each of the stations they visit from a special location detailed on each station’s page.

Lisa Iannidinardo, Stations Project Manager said, “We were looking for fun and exciting ways to welcome passengers back to the railway this summer. One of our team wanted to encourage younger passengers to explore stations across our region and came up with the Junior Rail Passbook idea.

“This last year has been difficult for children being in and out of schools and lockdowns so it’s a great opportunity to re-awaken their inner explorers!”

The passbooks are another way that Southern stations are creating a welcoming and fun environment for passengers with ‘The Great British Summer Holiday campaign’ launched last week, and 'Wish Trees,  stations in the south are embracing the upwards trend in staycations and leisure travel to encourage people of all ages to travel by train.

London Bridge – Information point next to the ticket office

London Victoria - Information pods

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
