PARKING BOOST FOR WHITSTABLE STATION

Region & Route:
| Southern

Network Rail has submitted plans to Canterbury city council to build a new car park on a piece of redundant land just off Railway Avenue to the north side of the station, providing much-needed additional parking facilities for passengers.

The proposals include laying a new tarmac surface with the provision of 76 spaces, with five disabled parking bays.  New lighting and CCTV cameras will also be installed to improve safety and security for people using the car park, and existing vegetation will be tidied up to complement the new facility.  The new car park, which will be managed by Network Rail, will supplement Southeastern’s existing car park on the south side of the station which already experiences a very high demand for parking spaces.

Dave Ward, Network Rail’s route director for Kent, said: “The new parking facility will benefit the people of Whitstable.   Residents had previously expressed a desire for the land to be put to better use.  Not only will the new car park improve the appearance of the land, it will increase the parking capacity at the station, making it more practical for a larger number of people to use trains for their daily journeys.”

Vince Lucas, Southeastern service delivery director, added: “We welcome the news that Network Rail are looking to build a new car park at Whitstable that will provide commuters extra options.”

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
