Paddington: A Year on the Tracks documentary series starts tonight

Region & Route:
Wales & Western: Western

A special four-part Channel 5 documentary series starts tonight (14 May) at 9pm and goes behind the scenes to show how Network Rail and train operators keep passengers moving at London Paddington station and across the west throughout the different seasons.

The documentary, called Paddington: A Year on the Tracks, was filmed before the coronavirus crisis and includes previously unseen footage from the last series of Paddington 24/7 which aired last year on Channel 5.

The first episode of Paddington: A Year on the Tracks focuses on spring with subsequent episodes shining the spotlight onto the challenges summer, autumn and winter bring for the railway.

It will follow railway workers across the Great Western Mainline as they deal with extreme weather, major engineering works, huge sporting events as well as the day-to-day challenge of running one of Britain’s busiest stations.

Previously episodes of Paddington 24/7 achieved consistently high viewing figures with up to two million viewers per episode.

Mustaq Haji, Network Rail’s station manager at London Paddington, said: “The show goes behind the scenes of day to day life at Paddington station and all the challenges we face in keeping services and passengers moving.

“One of our main focuses is ensuring the safety of passengers and staff using the railway and when we are faced with certain challenges we need to act quickly as you will see throughout the documentary.”

The first episode of Paddington: A Year on the Tracks will be aired on Thursday 14 May on Channel 5 at 9pm, with each subsequent episode shown on Thursday evenings at the same time.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
