OVERNIGHT ROAD CLOSURE ESSENTIAL FOR RAILWAY MAINTENANCE

Region & Route:
| Southern
Essential railway maintenance at Beddingham level crossing is taking place overnight on Friday 26 and Saturday 27 November 2004.  As a result, the crossing on the A27 will be closed to road traffic. A road closure and diversion will be in place from 10pm to 6am each day.  Andrew Munden, Network Rail Route Director, said:  “The railway and the road at Beddingham are both very busy and as a result we need to keep the crossing well maintained.  The work, which will take place over two nights, maintains the railway’s foundations and track alignment.” Network Rail track engineers will lift the crossing surface to enable a high-tech, on-track, railway machine, called a tamper (see photo), to pass through the crossing. The laser-guided tamper lifts the track and sleepers and steel fingers stir the ballast to improve drainage and foundation stability.  The road closure has been organised in conjunction with the Highways Agency and local authority.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
