OVERHAUL FOR WALLSEND ROAD LEVEL CROSSING

Region & Route:
| Southern
Wallsend Road Level Crossing at Pevensey Bay, East Sussex will be given an overhaul, which will require the closure of the crossing over the weekend of 21 and 22 May. Andrew Munden, Network Rail Route Director said: “The technology at this crossing was installed over 25 years ago and is need of renewal.  We will install new barriers and warning lights, and replace the electrical cabling.  The three day closure will cause some local traffic delays, but the work is essential and will make the crossing more reliable for both road users and rail passengers.” Wallsend Road will be closed to traffic from 10pm on Thursday 19 May to 6am on Monday 23 May.  Diversions will be put in place by East Sussex County Council and drivers are advised to take alternative routes.  Traffic on the A259 between Pevensey and Eastbourne will be diverted on to the B2104 and B2191 through Langney.  Southern train services will be running on Friday 20 May.  However, a replacement bus service will operate between Eastbourne and Hastings on Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 May.  The crossing will reopen to road and rail traffic at 6am on Monday 23 May.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
