Old Dalkeith Road to close for bridge upgrade
- Region & Route:
- Scotland’s Railway: Scotland
Network Rail is refurbishing the railway bridge over Old Dalkeith Road – at Cameron Toll roundabout – with the road beneath closed from today (Tuesday March 4) until March 14.
A £1.25m investment in the railway, the project will see the complete removal and replacement of the timber deck and track on the structure.
The metalwork on the bridge is also being grit-blasted, the steelwork repaired and partially repainted in areas where work has taken place.
Road closures will be in place between Old Dalkeith Road and Peffermill Road on the following dates/times:
- A full road closure and diversion from Tuesday 4 March until Friday 14 March.
- Further single lane closures at night (2200-0600) from Saturday 15 March until Friday 28 March.
- The footpath will be closed to pedestrians between Old Dalkeith Road and Peffermill Road until Friday 14 March.
A Network Rail spokesperson said: “We understand that road closures can be difficult for those living and working nearby, but this is the safest and quickest way to deliver the complex engineering work needed to refurbish the bridge.
“The work we are undertaking is vital to the long-term future of the line and our engineers are working hard to complete the repairs as quickly as possible and keep disruption to the local road network to a minimum.”

About Network Rail
We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.
Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
