Nuneaton’s historic station clock and footbridge get £4m upgrade
Work is now complete on a major revamp of Nuneaton station’s passenger footbridge to platforms and historic station clock.
Network Rail has invested £4m on the bridge overhaul and also repointing of the brickwork on the station’s 1915-built clock tower.
The bridge work includes a complete repaint and refresh of the interior walkway, new roof, new windows and essential maintenance to the lifts.
The improvements were carefully planned by maintenance teams in phases so the footbridge could stay open to passengers throughout.
James Dean, West Coast South Route Managing Director, said: “Thanks to everyone for being patient while we were working on the bridge, lifts and much-loved clock tower. I am delighted we’re seeing more and more people coming back to use the railway and making the most of the upgraded bridge. This work is all part of our commitment to build back better from the pandemic and encourage passengers to return to rail travel once again.”
Lawrence Bowman, customer experience director for station operator London Northwestern Railway, said: “These welcome improvements will make a real difference for our customers using Nuneaton station. The completion of the work comes at a great time, with more and more people returning to the railway as we go the extra mile to welcome people back on board.”
Marcus Jones, MP for Nuneaton, said: “I’m delighted that the work to transform the bridge and historic clock has now been completed. This significant public investment has not just improved the experience of passengers but it has also greatly improved the first impression for visitors to our area. As people return to travelling on the railway they will definitely notice the positive improvement to our main railway station.”
With more people returning to rail, passengers are reminded to follow government guidance and wear a face covering in busy indoor settings like on trains and in stations unless they are exempt.
Passengers can continue to travel with confidence with good ventilation systems on trains, extra cleaning and improved information about quieter times to make their journey.
