Nottinghamshire residents invited to find about more about level crossing replacement

Region & Route:
| Eastern

Network Rail is inviting residents in Sutton-in-Ashfield in Nottinghamshire to find out more about work to close Kings Mill Lane level crossing and replace it with a footbridge over the railway.

The new bridge will be cater for pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders and will be ramped for those with additional access needs and pushchairs. The bridge will be painted black and will only be visible to the paths immediately next to it.

Network Rail has secured planning permission from Nottinghamshire County Council to build the new footbridge, which will replace the existing level crossing and provide a safe route across the railway for residents.

Network Rail is able to divert the existing public right of way from the level crossing to the new footbridge through a Transport and Works Act Order. This has also allowed Network Rail to secure all the land needed to construct the footbridge.

The crossing is closing to improve safety in the area as it has seen a high number of trespass and vandalism incidents, as well as a tragic incident in 2012 when someone lost their life. Once the bridge is complete, the level crossing will close.

Work on the project begins this month as Network Rail begins to install the access road and compound for the project. Work to install the foundations will begin in September. The bridge will be constructed over the Winter and will open at the end of March, 2019.

Network Rail is holding a public drop-in event for residents who wish to find out more about the project on Wednesday, 8 August at The Mill Adventure Base in Sutton-in-Ashfield between 09:30 and 15:30. Representatives from Network Rail will be on hand to answer any questions which residents may have.

Anyone who wishes to find out more about the project but is unable to attend the event should call the Network Rail National Helpline on 03457 11 41 41 or visit https://www.networkrail.co.uk/running-the-railway/our-routes/lne-and-em/kings-mill-lane-level-crossing-improvement-programme/

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
