The search is on for the best in the business as Network Rail seeks nominations for the first ever Rail Partnership Awards 2009.

The awards will recognise and celebrate the hard work and dedication of Network Rail’s contractors and suppliers who have played a major role in helping the company deliver thousands of rail improvement schemes across the country.

Nominations are open to all suppliers - both firms or individuals - who have worked with Network Rail from January 2008 to May 2009. The winners will be chosen by Network Rail’s chief executive, Iain Coucher, and members of the board with the winners being announced at a special awards ceremony at the Birmingham Metropole on 14 July.

Network Rail’s chief executive, Iain Coucher, said: “The next five years will see massive levels of investment to improve the railway for passengers and freight users, with many schemes being carried out in partnership with our contractors and suppliers.

“These awards are an occasion for us to thank and reward the immense effort, teamwork and determination shown by our contractors and suppliers over the last year and encourage industry-wide best practice to help us deliver on our ambitions for the railway.”

The ten award categories span a number of fields and themes and include community engagement, environmental sustainability, heritage, IT, innovation, safety and teamwork.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
