New platform & entrance to be constructed at Mirfield station over Easter Weekend

From Saturday 19 to Monday 21 April, upgrade work being carried out between Huddersfield and Dewsbury means train services across the Pennines will be impacted.

Disruption is expected over the Easter weekend as major work takes place, with customers advised to plan their journey ahead of time and check before travelling at nationalrail.co.uk. To keep customers on the move, diversionary routes and rail replacement buses will be in operation, with amended timetables also in place.

Due to the scope of work in Mirfield, Station Road will be closed over the Easter weekend, meaning there will be a longer walk than usual from the station to the rail replacement bus stop locations on Huddersfield Road. 

Station Road is now also closed on Saturday nights in the lead-up to Easter weekend. Pedestrian access will remain in place during the road closures whilst the station is open, enabling customers access to the station platforms whilst trains are running. 

Access to Lidl and the Navigation Tavern will also be open at all times. 

The work being carried out will bring Mirfield one step closer to a newly upgraded station, which will see the reconstruction of the platforms, allowing the number of railway lines to increase from three to four, so more trains can run. 

Step-free access will also be brought to the station with a new, accessible footbridge with lifts, whilst a new station entrance concourse on Station Road, including lift access from the road to platform level, will also be built. 

The upgraded station car park will have new blue badge parking areas and improved cycle parking facilities. 

Elsewhere on the route between Huddersfield and Dewsbury, TRU engineers will carry out track renewals and signal testing.

“We’re aware that disruption isn’t ideal, so we would like to thank the people of Mirfield and beyond for their understanding as we continue our progress in delivering major upgrades to the station. 

“By the end of 2025, Mirfield station will have modernised facilities with faster, more frequent trains able to stop there in the future, meaning improved journeys across the North. 

“Please plan any journeys ahead of time, as both the station and Station Road will be closed. Engineering work elsewhere on the route will also impact services across the Pennines.” 

Notes to Editors

  • Our workforce is local, with 80% employment from within a 40-mile radius of the route, and 60% employed from within a 25-mile radius.
  • With a current workforce of around 5000 people, we expect to employ 8000 people over the length of the programme.
  • The half way mark of employing 590 apprentices has already been achieved, with 358 now working on TRU
    Improved natural environments near the railway through 10% biodiversity net gain across the route. This will create or enhance habitats for wildlife.
  • The multi-billion-pound Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU) will bring this line into the 21st century with 70-miles of fully electric, digital railway.

 

Our plans include:

    • Electrifying the whole route between Manchester and York via Huddersfield and 
      Leeds 
    • Installing a new digital signalling system along the Transpennine route
    • Doubling the number of tracks from two to four between Huddersfield and
      Westtown in Dewsbury.
    • Station improvements along the route to enhance customer experience, comfort 
      and accessibility
    • Improving the railway on diversionary routes to allow more trains to run, to help 
      keep passengers and freight moving while the core Transpennine route is closed to 
      deliver essential upgrades. This will provide capacity and reliability improvements 
      for future too.
