NEW NON-EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR APPOINTED

Network Rail is pleased to announce the appointment of Stephen Russell as a non-executive director with effect from 19 September 2007. Mr Russell is the former Chief Executive of Boots Group PLC (2000 -2003), working there since he started his first job at the company in 1967. He was instrumental in developing Boots’s business and customer focus. In addition, Mr Russell holds several non-executive directorships including Barclays PLC – where he is chairman of the audit committee and a member of the board risk committee and Business Control Systems Group. He is also a trustee of St John's Ambulance and Tommy's, the baby charity. Announcing Mr Russell's appointment, Network Rail’s Chairman, Ian McAllister, said: “Stephen Russell brings a wealth of corporate experience to our Board. He will be a great addition to the existing non-executive talent. Stephen’s focus on customers and skills of risk analysis at Boots and Barclays are particular skills we welcome. I look forward to working with him as we continue our task of delivering a safe and reliable railway.” Cambridge-educated Mr Russell, born in 1945, is married with two children and has a big interest in sport, especially cricket, having played for Surrey. Network Rail’s Board will now comprise three executive directors and eight non-executives including the Chairman.
