NEW JOBS FOR RAMSGATE

Region & Route:
| Southern
Large scale improvements to Ramsgate train depot will create jobs for 200 local people when work is finished in 2007. Dave Ward, Network Rail route director, said: “We are delighted to be involved in this £45million project, which will not only provide top class facilities for the trains that serve rail passengers in Kent, but also great employment opportunities for 200 local people. Mr Ward added: “In line with our industry partners, we have carefully prepared this project to ensure that work will not disrupt passengers or the facilities currently provided at the depot.” Work will include the construction of a modern five-rail maintenance facility, trainwash and stabling for existing and new Integrated Kent Franchise trains. Dr Stephen Ladyman, MP for Thanet South, said: “The development of these facilities at Ramsgate is a clear sign of the Government’s commitment to the area and this important investment is good news for jobs. Also, a high quality train service in Kent and a fast link between Thanet and London is vital for regeneration. “The company that will deliver the Integrated Kent Franchise will be announced shortly, the fast trains are on order and will be on line by 2009, and the new maintenance facilities will mean that local workers will be a key part of keeping Kent’s new train services working and comfortable.”

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
