NEW FOOTBRIDGE ARRIVES AT CANTERBURY WEST

Region & Route:
| Southern

Thousands of passengers who use Canterbury West every day got their first glance of the station’s new footbridge this morning after it was lifted into place by crane over the weekend.

The project to install the bridge, two new lifts and new tactile paving along the edge of the platform is on track for completion in early 2011.  Once complete, passengers will benefit from step-free access between the station entrance and all the platforms making the railway more accessible for everyone.

Dave Ward, Network Rail’s route director for Kent, said: “Passengers will be pleased to see good progress being made with the installation of the new facilities which will make it easier for everyone to use the station, particularly those with reduced mobility.”

Canterbury West passengers will also benefit from further station improvements through funding from the national stations improvement programme.  These will include the installation of a new toilet, new customer information screens and lighting, the redecoration of the ticket office and changes to the car park layout.

Network Rail is managing and delivering the accessibility improvements, which are being funded through the Department for Transport's (DfT) £370m Access For All scheme.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
