New cycle hub opens for Haymarket passengers

Region & Route:
Scotland’s Railway: Scotland

Haymarket’s new cycle storage hub opened today (Friday, April 1) following a £300,000 upgrade to more than quadruple the number of spaces available at the station.

A two-tier 90-bike storage facility has been installed outside the station together with cycle hoops and a glazed canopy.

Stonework seating will also be constructed in front of the new cycle hub in April to further improve facilities for passengers.

The scheme has been jointly funded by Sustrans, City of Edinburgh Council and Transport Scotland and delivered by the ScotRail Alliance.

The investment is another boost to passenger facilities at Haymarket, which underwent a £25m rebuild in 2013 to create a new main station building and concourse with step-free access to all platforms.

Phil Verster, managing director of the ScotRail Alliance, said: “Haymarket is one of the most accessible stations on our network and one of the best connected with its tram interchange and Bike and Go facility. This new cycle hub is another welcome addition to the station and demonstrates our commitment to working collaboratively to deliver integrated journeys for our customers.”

John Bury, Head of Planning and Transport for the City of Edinburgh Council, said: “We are delighted to see the new cycle hub open for use, which will benefit the thousands of people who pass through the station each day. Haymarket is an important transport connection point and this development will make it more accessible for cyclists.”

John Lauder, Sustrans Scotland’s National Director, said: “By working with the ScotRail Alliance and City of Edinburgh Council to bring first class cycle facilities to Haymarket we’re hoping to encourage more people to travel actively and to achieve the Scottish Government vision of 10% of everyday journeys by bike by 2020. We’re looking forward to seeing the final touches to this amazing project put in place later this month!”

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
