NEW CAR PARK TREBLES SPACES AT WHITSTABLE STATION

Region & Route:
| Southern

Passengers using Whitstable station can now take advantage of improved parking facilities following the opening of a new car park which almost trebles the number of spaces available.

The new car park was built on redundant land just off Railway Avenue to the north side of the station.  Over the last two months, the land has been resurfaced and 76 spaces have been created, including five disabled parking bays.  New lighting and CCTV cameras were also installed to improve safety and security for people using the car park.

Dave Ward, Network Rail’s route director for Kent, said: “Passengers in Whitstable rely on rail for 780,000 journeys every year.  Many of the people making these journeys travel to the station by car, putting parking spaces in high demand.  This investment in additional parking capacity will significantly increase the number of spaces available, making it easier for passengers to drive to the station to make their onward journeys by train.”

Vince Lucas, service delivery director, Southeastern, said: "We welcome the opening of this new car park. We will continue to work closely with Network Rail to provide the best services and facilities for our passengers."

The new car park, which will be managed by Network Rail, will supplement Southeastern’s existing car park on the south side of the station.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
