Network Rail’s route director issues apology to Cambridge passengers

Rail services were disrupted through Cambridge last night (Monday 13 January) following a dewirement at Shelford. This affected passengers travelling on Thameslink, Great Northern and Greater Anglia services from London to Cambridge.
Network Rail’s engineers were on site as quickly as possible to free the train caught up in the wires and worked through the night to fix the damage and reopen the line. Train services have resumed this morning and the issue is being thoroughly investigated to prevent it happening again.
Ellie Burrows, Network Rail’s route director for Anglia, said: “I’d like to say sorry to all our passengers who were affected by the overhead wire issues at Shelford last night, especially since the bad weather made it even worse for passengers trying to get home. We worked overnight to repair the wires and the line has been reopened. I’m also sorry to those who have been affected by the issues at Hitchin this morning because of a derailed freight train in the sidings. We will be working hard to understand the causes of these incidents and get back to running the levels of good service that passengers rightly expect.”
