Network Rail to become accredited Real Living Wage employer

Region & Route:
National

Network Rail is to become an accredited Real Living Wage employer, ensuring that thousands of railway colleagues are paid appropriately to reflect the varied and vital work they carry out.

While Network Rail already pays its 41,000 staff the Real Living Wage, becoming an officially accredited Real Living Wage employer will mean that all of our contractors – who provide us with facilities services such as cleaning and catering – are also expected to pay their employees the living wage.

Andrew Haines, Network Rail chief executive, said: “We already pay our 41,000 employees the Real Living Wage and have been working closely with our contractors to ensure this is extended to our supply chain too.

“It is vital that we recognise the important work carried out by thousands of colleagues – day in and day out – helping to keep our stations clean and improve the journeys of millions of passengers every day.”

Becoming an accredited Real Living Wage employer has been a long-term ambition for Network Rail. Research by the Living Wage Foundation has highlighted numerous business benefits for employers who pay their staff the living wage – including reduced absenteeism, improved recruitment and retention of staff and improved worker morale.

Network Rail has been working through its processes to ensure that it has the right systems in place to support a smooth introduction of the Real Living Wage.

Notes to editors

  • Network Rail agreed in principle to become an accredited Living Wage employer in November 2018, subject to understanding the potential financial impact on the supply chain.
  • The decision was ratified by the Board in September 2019, and further work was undertaken to ensure that we had the appropriate arrangements in place to introduce a phased approach.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
