Network Rail teams working to boost railway reliability in Hertfordshire

Network Rail will be investing £250,000 into boosting railway reliability in Hertfordshire this Christmas.

Between Christmas Eve and Wednesday 27 December, Network Rail teams will be working to renew overhead line equipment, the specialist equipment which powers trains on the route, between Bayford and Watton-at-Stone.

Once complete, passengers will benefit from a more modern and reliable railway, with fewer instances of disruption.

The work is taking place over the Christmas period as no trains run on Christmas Day and Boxing Day, meaning the upgrades can take place without impacting on passengers.

James Wright, senior portfolio manager for Network Rail, will be working on the project over the festive period.

James said: “The work we’re doing this Christmas will help to provide a more modern and reliable railway for passengers.

“I’ll be working on site over the festive period to make sure that the work runs smoothly and to support the wider team.

“This work is part of a wider programme of improvements to overhead line equipment in this area, and we look forward to completing this work so that passengers can reap the benefits.”

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
