Network Rail’s Scotland Earthwork and Drainage Framework scooped ‘UK Geotechnical Team of the Year’ at the 2023 Ground Engineering Awards in London.

The framework includes members of the Network Rail geotechnical asset and capital delivery teams alongside other external framework partners.

The Ground Engineering Awards brings together the leaders in the industry to celebrate the achievements of projects, people and businesses between January 2022 and January 2023.

Judges were impressed with the team’s excellent use of techniques including drone mapping, efficient rockfall netting design and carbon tools to deliver improved results.

Team members were commended on their collaborative design solutions, for embedding learning and for providing a consistent outcome.

Network Rail Scotland was also highly commended for the Gatehead Emergency in the same category and a shortlisted finalist for Lochailort Flood Prevention in the category ‘Geotechnical Project of the Year (£1million to £3million value).’

Sean Gallacher, Regional Asset Manager (Geotech), Network Rail Scotland commented: “We are proud of our success at these awards which are all examples of effective collaboration and efficient teamwork from internal colleagues to our contractors.

“Our emergency response is something to be proud of and wouldn’t be possible without the dedication and commitment of colleagues -it is a team effort.

“There are those who go about their duties quietly whilst massively contributing to the Capital Delivery programme in their own way. Their individual contributions collectively form the most important piece of the jigsaw that has made the framework a success.

“Entries into these types of things are something we will continue to do so that our colleagues’ dedication continues to be recognised by peers in the industry.”

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
