Region & Route:
National
Network Rail is celebrating after winning five National Railway Heritage awards for restoration projects around the country. The £41m refurbishment of Waterloo’s station roof picked up the First Engineering Craft Skills Award. The project involved replacing the 100-year-old 28,000 square metre train shed roof, the largest in Europe, without disrupting the 150 million passengers who travelled through the London station during the project. Restoration of offices at Newcastle Central station won the Ian Allan Publishing Award. The £3.7m project restored 80 rooms to their former 19th century glory using traditional methods including rebuilding decorative ceiling roses. Refurbishment of the historic Helsby Signal Box in Cheshire won the Westinghouse Signalling Award. Two 25th Anniversary Awards for past conservation projects went to the engineering programme on the five-span Moy Viaduct in the Scottish Highlands and work on Glasgow Central Station. Simon Kirby, Director, Major Projects and Investments, Network Rail, said: “We are delighted to receive these awards which recognise the importance of our heritage work.” The awards are given to organisations that have played a part in helping to maintain railway heritage and encourage high standards of structural restoration and environmental care. Judging was carried out by a panel of adjudicators from the Heritage Railway Association.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
