NETWORK RAIL RESPONDS TO ORR REPORT ON NETWORK RAIL PERFORMANCE

Region & Route:
National
Commenting on the ORR's report out today concerning Network Rail's performance, John Armitt, Chief Executive said: "The important thing to remember is that train performance continues to improve, almost 90% of train services are now running on time and delays caused by the infrastructure continue to be reduced - 7% down on last year. "We will not let up our drive for continuing improvements and we will maintain a close working relationship with train operators to help deliver a better service for passengers and freight users."

Notes to editors

Predictable weather events last year were managed well, such as autumn, where delays due to 'leaves on the line' were reduced by 27% compared to last year. However the extreme gales on January 18th caused over a weeks worth of disruption in just one day (1/4 million minutes) with over 1,000 trees and other debris being blown onto railway lines across the country - it was an extreme on-off event

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
