NETWORK RAIL PREPARES FOR SECOND GOGAR EVENT

Region & Route:
Scotland’s Railway: Scotland

Network Rail will host two further public exhibitions about Gogar Rail Interchange following the success of the first event, the company announced today (Tuesday 11 August).

Speaking in advance of the second exhibition, due to take place in the Gyle on Thursday 13 August, Ron McAulay, Network Rail’s director, Scotland commented:

“Our first exhibition on 29 July attracted over 300 interested members of the public and we anticipate a similar response to our second event this week. As a result, we will run a third event in Waverley station later this month.

“Gogar Interchange will form a key transport hub for the east of Scotland on its completion in 2011. We look forward to delivering the station and seeing it incorporated into the rest of Scotland’s growing rail network.”

The Gogar Rail Interchange project, funded by Transport Scotland, comprises the creation of a new rail station on the Edinburgh to Fife railway lines in the Gogar area. This would be located adjacent to a new stop on the Edinburgh Tram network for onward passenger transfer to Edinburgh Airport.

A raised walkway will link the railway station and tram terminal whilst a subway will link the railway station with the Gyle Shopping Centre on the south side of the A8.

The railway station will be on two levels. The lower level area will have a lift, staircase and escalators to take passengers up to the ticket office and concourse at first floor level.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
