Network Rail on track to refurbish Mauchline bridges

Network Rail will shortly begin work to repair and strengthen the two railway bridges over Ayr Road, Mauchline as part of Network Rail’s UK wide railway upgrade plan.

The work on the bridge is part of a wider programme of work on our structures which is needed every 25 years and designed to extend their lifespan and continue to ensure the safe operation of the railway infrastructure.

Work will start work on Monday 19 June and will be ongoing until Friday 4 August. During this time temporary traffic lights will be in place on Ayr Road at the bridge to enable the work – which will consist of steel strengthening, metal work repairs and work on the bridge’s masonry.

The road will also need to be closed to traffic overnight only for 5 nights from 11.30pm Thursday 20 July re-opening at 7 am on Tuesday 25 July. A signposted diversion will be in place at this time.

Work will be delivered in a combination of both day and night shifts. Day shift work (7am to 6pm) work will be ongoing throughout the bridge works and nightshift work will take place each Saturday night from 11.55pm until 12.10pm Sunday.

Billy McKay, Network Rail programme manager, said: “We appreciate that temporary traffic lights on any road are inconvenient. However, this is the most efficient and safest way to undertake the work required on the bridge.

“Delivering this work on both of the two adjacent bridges, in just 6 weeks is a logistical challenge but we have planned the job carefully with our contractors and will complete it with the minimum possible inconvenience to the local community.”
