Network Rail on-track to deliver £10m of upgrades this Christmas

Region & Route:
Scotland’s Railway: Scotland

Network Rail engineers will be working to complete more than £10m of maintenance and enhancement work over the Christmas and New Year holidays.

Hundreds of railway staff will be out across Scotland to deliver vital maintenance projects, renew life-expired tracks and enhance stations.

Some of the biggest projects will take place in Edinburgh where engineers will be working on new platforms and signalling systems at Edinburgh Waverley station as well as renewing track in Princes Street Gardens over Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

In Glasgow, new track will be laid on the busy approach to Glasgow Central, near Salkeld Street south of the Clyde, over the same period.

In North Lanarkshire, a key junction will be renewed at Greenhill, on the lines towards Perth and Falkirk.

The works are being completed on the public holidays to limit disruption for passengers.

Over the festive period, Network Rail will be investing £148m to improve and upgrade the rail network with more than 25,000 members of staff working at over 300 sites across Britain.

Lindsay Saddler, infrastructure director, said: “The projects we are delivering this festive season are vital to the long-term future of Scotland’s railway.

“They will improve the reliability of the service we provide by renewing ageing infrastructure and will help to reduce long-term maintenance costs.

“By undertaking these major engineering works at a time of year when lines are traditionally closed, we’ll also be able to limit the impact of the projects on our customers.”

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
