NETWORK RAIL KICKS OFF SEARCH FOR DEVELOPMENT PARTNER FOR GLASGOW’S QUEEN STREET STATION

Network Rail today (Friday) launched the search for a development partner to undertake commercial development at Queen Street Station in Glasgow. The development will provide enhanced station facilities for passengers and a landmark mixed-use development in the airspace above the station car park.
A notice has been issued in the Official Journal of the European Union seeking registrations of interest to undertake the development of the site, which extends to approximately 1.85 acres. All proposals will be required to include enhancements to the station, and can be extended to include other land not owned by Network Rail adjacent to the site.
The deadline for responses will be January 2011 with those shortlisted invited to make detailed scheme submissions. It is anticipated that final developer selection will take place in June 2011.

The successes we’ve already had with other developments at our stations, such as Cannon Street station in London, are a shining example of the real and tangible benefits and results these partnerships can deliver.
"The end result of this development partnership will be a new station for passengers, and a new landmark building in the heart of the city of Glasgow.”

Queen Street station:
Is the city’s main terminus for all north and east bound trains including Scotland’s busiest express route, which runs between Glasgow and Edinburgh every 15 minutes.
Aberdeen, Dundee, Stirling and Inverness are served from Queen Street station, as are numerous other commuter routes within the greater Glasgow area.
Glasgow:
Is Scotland’s largest city, with a population of 577,980 and primary retail catchment of approximately 2.8 million.
Has 2.79 million sq ft of city centre retail floorspace, ranked second only to London’s West End.

Is one of the largest land and property owners in the country and will generate over £1bn in the next five years from commercial activities for re-investment in our rail estate. This would be enough to transform Birmingham New Street or King’s Cross stations, or put in place 5,000km of new railway
