Network Rail invites people to see plans to protect East Yorkshire railway embankment

Network Rail is inviting people in North Ferriby to find out more about an £8million project to protect the railway embankment, which carries the Hull to Selby line, from further erosion. The work will mean services can continue running safely and reliably for years to come.

Temporary improvements have already been carried out, including emergency work to stabilise the embankment, after coastal erosion caused a crack in the railway embankment in 2018. More long-term work to reinforce and strengthen the embankment will begin next month, to prevent further movement and potential damage. In order for this work to be carried out safely, a section of the footpath will be temporarily closed from Monday, 9 March until January 2021.

Network Rail is holding an information event on Monday, 17 February at North Ferriby Village Hall, between 15:30 and 18:00. People will have the opportunity to see the plans for the work and ask any questions which they may have.

Clare Brint, Route Asset Manager for Network Rail, said: “We hope people in the area come along to the information event to find out more about the work, what it involves and how vital it is.

“We’ve already seen the affect that coastal erosion can have on the railway and this work is essential so train services can continue running reliably and safely.”

Patrick Wharam, Countryside Access Manager at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: "The council's countryside access team is working closely with Network Rail to minimise disruption to walkers and cyclists during the closure period."
