NETWORK RAIL GETS ON ITS BIKE FOR CHARITY THIS SUMMER

Region & Route:
National

Network Rail and the NSPCC joined forces with BBC weather presenter Carol Kirkwood to kick start the launch of the Buckinghamshire Big Bike Ride event.

As the official sponsor of the Big Bike Ride, Network Rail is extremely proud to be involved in such a worthwhile and fun event and is encouraging its employees to get on their bikes and get involved, whether that be volunteering on the day or organising their own cycle challenge.

One group of dedicated Network Rail employees have already set themselves the impressive challenge of cycling the entire length of Britain from Lands End to John O'Groats with the ambition of raising over £10,000 for the charity.

For the Buckinghamshire event, participants are being invited by the NSPCC to choose their challenge from either the 25km Princes Loop, 50km Ridgeway Route or the more testing 75km Chilterns Trail.

Network Rail chief executive and keen cyclist Iain Coucher will be attending the Princes Risborough event on Sunday 12 July and leading the count down to the first race as the cyclists hit the road from Princes Risborough School.

Iain Coucher said of the event: “As an enthusiastic cyclist I am looking forward to being part of the Princes Risborough experience and am particularly proud to be working with such a fantastic charity, which does great work to help children and their families.

“This is a great event and I am encouraging everyone at Network Rail to get on their bikes for the Big Bike Ride this summer and help raise funds for our chosen charity.”

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
