Network Rail is celebrating a milestone achievement as the company was named as one of the top 20 apprentice employers in England in the National Apprenticeship Service’s Top 100 Apprenticeship Employers for 2020.

The Top 100 Apprenticeship Employers is the new national league table showcasing the nation’s outstanding apprenticeship employers, developed by the National Apprenticeship Service, in partnership with High Fliers Research. Out of 10,000 apprentice employers, and out of 400 who were considered for the top 100 list, Network Rail ranked 20th.

Richard Turner, Network Rail’s head of apprenticeships, said:

“I’m absolutely delighted by this achievement. It’s testament to the great strides we’ve made to offer varied, inclusive and welcoming schemes in which our apprentices can expect to pick up truly employable skills that will serve them for life both on and off the railway.

“It’s also fantastic to see so many other companies in the rail industry make the top 100. The transport sector as a whole is a huge, moving, evolving creature - making that happen takes a lot of great minds, and so there’s a lot of great apprenticeships in the industry.”

Rail Minister Chris Heaton Harris said:

“The engineers of the future will be trained on the major infrastructure projects we are building today.

“As we build back better, there has never been a better time to start working in rail, with an apprenticeship helping to unlock new skills and huge career potential. That’s why it's fantastic to see Network Rail recognised as one of the top apprentice employers in the UK.”

Network Rail has a huge range of apprenticeships, with 45 different schemes running at any one time, ranging from core apprenticeships in engineering and rail operations, to cyber intrusion analysis and data sciences.

Keneefia Parker, a track apprentice based at Network Rail’s dedicated apprenticeship training facility near Coventry, spoke highly of her experience on the scheme:

Applications for Network Rail’s Rail Engineering Technician scheme are now open: https://www.networkrail.co.uk/careers/early-careers/apprenticeships/

The new rankings recognise the country’s leading apprenticeship employers for their overall commitment to employing apprentices, their creation of new apprenticeships, the diversity of their new apprentices, and the progression of their apprentices onto further apprenticeships and employment.

Entries were independently assessed and the data used to compile the new national leader board of top apprenticeship employers.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
