Network Rail has today concluded its new rail supply contracts for the provision of almost 450,000 tonnes of rail for the five years to 2030. The contracts have been awarded to British Steel, Saarstahl Rail and Voestalpine, with Arcelor Mittal also able to supply on an ad-hoc basis.
Clive Berrington, group director railway business services, said: “British Steel remain extremely competitive in the provision of rail and we are delighted that they will remain our main supplier in the years ahead.”
The new contracts ‘go-live’ from 1st July and in summary the five-year contracts will see:
- British Steel supply a minimum of 337,000 tonnes of long and short rail
- Saarstahl Rail supply a minimum of 78,000 tonnes of long and short rail
- Voestalpine supply a minimum of 8,500 tonnes of switch rail
- All these suppliers, and ArcelorMittal, are part of a zero-value framework to enable ad-hoc supply as required
Mr Berrington concluded by saying: “Our European suppliers are an important part of our rail supply chain both for specialist items, and to ensure security of supply.”

About Network Rail
We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.
Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
