Network Rail announces start date for new footbridge over railway in Lincoln

Region & Route:
| Eastern

Network Rail has announced that a major multimillion pound project to improve safety at Brayford Wharf level crossing in Lincoln will begin on Monday, 29 October.

The project will see a stepped footbridge installed at the crossing, providing a new route across the railway with improved safety. The level crossing will remain open, but the footbridge will provide 24/7 access across a busy railway for pedestrians and cyclists who do not wish to wait at the crossing.

To allow the bridge to be installed, Brayford Wharf East Road will be closed to traffic from Monday, 29 October until Monday, 6 May and a clearly signposted diversionary route will be in operation. The layout of the road will be changed slightly to allow the bridge to be installed.

For the vast majority of the work, access for pedestrians and cyclists will be maintained however there will be short periods of time when a diversion is in place to allow certain parts of the installation to take place safely. The diversion will be clearly advertised.

Rob McIntosh, Route Managing Director at Network Rail, said: “This scheme is part of the Railway Upgrade Plan and we’re absolutely delighted to be making a start on it. The new bridge will provide a route across the railway 24 hours a day, seven days a week and improve safety at the crossing.

“We know that this work will have an impact and we’d like to thank motorists and residents in Lincoln for their patience whilst this takes place. Once completed, the people of Lincoln will benefit from an iconic footbridge which will better serve the community.”

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
