A new look Board was unveiled today as Network Rail strengthened its leadership team to take the company forward to meet the challenges of the next five years with the appointment of three new executive directors.

Ian McAllister, chairman said: "Over the past six years we have set about sorting out and reversing the mess left by Railtrack. Safety, train punctuality and investment in expanding our railway are all at record levels. There is always more to do, but we can be proud that passengers and freight users enjoy a good standard of service that has significantly improved in recent years.

"The first phase of Network Rail's job to transform Britain's railways is coming to a close and we are embarking on another that will be about expansion, growth and delivering our core business to even higher levels of performance.

"To that end we need new Board members that can bring a focus at the highest level for our customers, for the expansion and investment that is vital to deliver a bigger, better railway and a keen edge to help us meet the tough targets our regulator will set us."

The new Board members will be:

  • Director, operations and customer service - Robin Gisby
  • Director, infrastructure investment - Simon Kirby
  • Director, planning and regulation - Paul Plummer

In conclusion Mr McAllister said: “Our new Board members will play a key role in helping the company meet the challenges ahead - growth, development and expansion. It's a future full of promise both for the company and for all who use the railway."

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
