NATIONAL TRAIN PERFORMANCE FOR PERIOD SIX IS 92.4%

Punctuality on the railways reached 92.4% during period 6, according to monthly performance data released today by Network Rail.

The data for Britain's train services covers the period from 21 August 2011 to 17 September 2011. This compares to 93.5% for the same period last year. The moving annual average is now at 90.5%.

Notes to editors

  1. The single biggest incident this period was a cable theft on the 6th September just outside London Bridge delaying almost 1,000 trains causing 12,476 minutes or 8.6 days of delays
  2. There were a wide range of issues impacting on Virgin Trains’ performance in period 6. Some of the biggest incidents included a freight train fire at Castlethorpe, a signalling power supply failure at Watford Junction, flooding near Carlisle, a number of fatalities and trespass incidents and other track and power supply faults
  3. Arrived on time - the measure of train punctuality also known as PPM (public performance measure) means trains arriving at their destinations within five minutes for commuter services and within 10 minutes for long distance services. This measure of punctuality is commonly used throughout Europe. Heathrow Express, Grand Central, Hull Trains and Eurostar are not included in the National PPM
  4. National train punctuality is measured for all trains across the whole network, including cancelled services and delays caused by external factors (such as vandalism, extreme weather, suicides etc). Punctuality did not start to be recorded in this vigorous and thorough way until 1997. Before then Railtrack, and BR before it, did not measure all services and also excluded external factors and other items from their numbers
