Multi-million-pound railway bridge investment begins in Angus

Region & Route:
Scotland’s Railway: Scotland

Network Rail has begun a £3m project to demolish and reconstruct the railway bridge on Craigo Road, Marykirk.

Engineers are installing a temporary bridge next to the current structure, which is due to be demolished in early 2025.

The temporary bridge will allow nearby communities to cross until the new permanent bridge is installed next year.

When complete, the new permanent bridge will better support the weight of traffic which crosses daily, carrying vehicles over the railway line between Dundee and Aberdeen.

Allison Flannagan, project manager, Network Rail, said: “We know that Craigo Road is important for connecting the communities in the area and that’s why we’re creating a temporary bridge to allow vehicles continued access during the project.

“Replacing a bridge is a significant undertaking and we understand the impact that the project will have for people who live closest to the works. The approach we’re taking to demolish and replace the permanent bridge is the safest and most efficient way to undertake the work required.

“We’re grateful for the patience of the local community and road users during this vital work.”

Members of the public with questions about this work can contact Network Rail’s 24-hour national helpline on 03457 11 41 41. For latest information and progress updates follow on twitter @NetworkRailScot.

Notes to Editors

Work on the project will begin on September 23 and will be ongoing until April 2025.

Installation of the new structure will be the first step in the project in order to take traffic off of Craigo Road to enable the diversion of utilities from the bridge.

This will take place between October and December with work to install the temporary bridge over the railway being done at night when trains are not running.

In preparation for the demolition of the structure, a range of utility connections, (electricity, gas, water, telecoms etc) will be removed from the bridge and diverted over the temporary structure. These will be reconnected over the main bridge when it is rebuilt.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
