MOY VIADUCT SCOOPS NATIONAL RAILWAY HERITAGE AWARD

Region & Route:
Scotland’s Railway: Scotland
Moy viaduct scooped its second prestigious award this year after National Railway Heritage Awards judges voted it the best Engineering Structure Project of the last 25 years at a special anniversary awards ceremony. Special honours were given to the best overall projects since the awards began in 1979, as a unique way to celebrate the 25th anniversary. The Grade A-listed historic structure, built in 1897, received a major programme of improvement works in 2002, which cost £2.6 million.  This involved building a new structure within the existing timber viaduct.  It was honoured last year at the awards, where it received the Chairman’s Special Award Ron McAulay, Network Rail’s Route Director, Scotland, said:  “We are absolutely delighted that our engineering work for Moy Viaduct has been recognised again at these prestigious awards.  The project involved an enormous undertaking and demonstrates the expertise and achievements of the project team and the designers. “The Moy Viaduct project enabled us to substantially improve efficiency and demonstrates our ongoing commitment to rebuilding Britain’s railway network.” Earlier this year Moy Viaduct was commended in the ‘conservation elements of the project’ category at the Saltire Society Awards, which recognise excellence in civil engineering in Scotland,

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
