MOTORISTS WARNED IN LEVEL CROSSING CLAMPDOWN

Region & Route:
| Southern
“Jump the lights and you’ll pay the price” is the warning from Network Rail and the British Transport Police (BTP) following an exercise last week to reduce the number of motorists misusing Feltham station level crossing. BTP officers and Network Rail staff who monitored the level crossing last week stopped and warned 11 offenders who were caught jumping the warning lights that appear when the crossing barriers are lowering and a train is approaching. A return visit is now planned for next month, and anyone caught jumping the lights will be charged by BTP officers in a further attempt to crack down on the misuse of the crossing. Network Rail’s Route Director, David Pape, said: “Misusing level crossings is extremely dangerous and puts the lives of the motorist and hundreds of train passengers in jeopardy. Lights, audible warnings and barriers at level crossings should never be ignored. By coming down hard on offenders we are putting out a clear message that level crossing misuse can have fatal consequences and will not be tolerated.” Supt Mark Newton, from BTP London South Area, said: “British Transport Police will not condone irresponsible drivers risking their lives and others by not stopping at level crossings.  High level patrols and warnings have deterred some but not all and so we will crack down on those who continue to ignore the barriers as we continue in putting our message across.  We will continue to support Network Rail and our other partners in further initiatives to cut crime and make the network a safer place for all.” Motorists caught at the crossing may be charged with ‘Failure to stop at an automated traffic signal’ resulting in fines of up to £1000 and three points on their licence. Motorists may also be found guilty of ‘Endangering Safety’ which can lead to fines of up to £5000 or up to 6 months in prison.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
