Road users in Bletchley, Milton Keynes are being informed about a seven-day closure of Saxon Street this month needed ahead of a major project to rebuild a railway bridge.

Saxon Street (B4034) in Bletchley will be closed to motorists between Watling Street and Princes Way from 7am on Monday 12 January until late in the afternoon on Sunday 18 January 2026.

During this time, rail engineers will carry out ground investigation surveys and vegetation clearance needed ahead of major work to replace the bridge, which is being completed as part of the East West Rail project. When complete, East West Rail will connect Oxford, Milton Keynes, Bedford and Cambridge, improving access to jobs, housing and leisure opportunities across the region.

Surveys on the 1970s-built bridge are needed to help engineers finalise designs for a replacement structure.

During the road closure, a clearly signposted diversion will be in place. Access for pedestrians and cyclists will remain open throughout the project's duration.

Edmund Waddelove, senior sponsor for Network Rail, said: “We’d like to thank road users and business owners in advance for their patience while we complete these important surveys, which are needed ahead of a major project to rebuild the railway bridge spanning Saxon Street in Bletchley.

“The bridge provides an important rail connection for future passenger and freight services running on the new East West Rail route, so this vital work is needed to keep it safe and reliable for many years to come.”

Network Rail and its East West Rail Alliance partners have written to local people about the road closure and are working closely with Milton Keynes City Council. During the closure, teams from Milton Keynes City Council will be refreshing road markings and lining on Saxon Street. Collaborating on closures like this will help to minimise disruption for road users.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
