MEDIA UPDATE: EDINBURGH WAVERLEY DERAILMENT

Region & Route:
Scotland’s Railway: Scotland

The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) concluded its on-site investigation at noon today (Thursday) and our engineers are now working to recover the derailed train.

Due to the need to bring heavy equipment onto the railway to help re-rail the train, the recovery of the vehicle cannot take place while services are running.

The train will be removed from the site tonight, with east-bound trains terminating at Haymarket from 21:00 to allow our engineers access to the lines. A replacement bus service will then operate between Haymarket and Waverley.

Engineers will work overnight to remove the train and begin to repair damage to the track and other equipment in the area. It is expected that these works will continue into Friday.

We expect to have three out of four lines open tomorrow, but a revised timetable will be in operation on Friday for Waverley-bound ScotRail trains. Cross-border services will not be affected.

David Simpson, Network Rail route managing director for Scotland, said: “Our engineers are working as quickly as possible to remove the vehicle and repair the railway.

“We understand the inconvenience this incident has caused to the travelling public and restoring a normal service as soon as possible is our top priority."

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
