MEDIA INVITATION: NETWORK RAIL UNVEILS OPTIONS FOR THE FUTURE OF LINES INTO WATERLOO

Region & Route:
National
Date:               Thursday 3 November Time:              9.30am Venue:            Network Rail, 40 Melton Street, London, NW1 2EE Contact:         Kevin Groves / Janine Mantle 020 7557 8292 Journalists are invited to attend a briefing with John Armitt, Network Rail’s Chief Executive, as Network Rail launches its first ‘Route Utilisation Strategy’, which looks at options for the future of lines into Waterloo. The Network Rail strategy looks at possible enhancements and options for growing the railway, as well as getting the most out of existing capacity. These options, which are being presented for wide consultation, have been put together by an industry steering group, which includes: the DfT, the ORR and the train and freight operating companies. As the company launches the consultation, journalists are offered a presentation outlining what the RUS is, how it is put together, what is suggested for the future of the routes from Waterloo, and the next steps.  Journalists will also have the opportunity to put questions to John Armitt and his ‘RUS’ team. We ask all journalists who intend to come to confirm this by 5pm on Tuesday 1 November.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
