Latest stage of investment at Leeds station will see new gateline installed

Network Rail has today (Wednesday, 27 March) announced that an upgrade to the gateline leading to the main concourse at Leeds station will take place later this year in the next stage of investment.

The project will see the current gateline removed and replaced, with the new machines installed in a straighter alignment which will significantly improve passenger flow through the station and reduce congestion during peak times.

This project is the latest in a long line of improvements which have been announced at the station, including a major scheme to install a new, transparent roof over the South Concourse. Once completed, the new roof will allow more sunlight into the area, creating a nicer environment for passengers. The replacement of the roof and the gateline will complete in time for the UCI Road World Championships, which roll into the city in September.

Rob McIntosh, Route Managing Director for Network Rail, said: “We are investing heavily into improving Leeds station for all those who use it and we are delighted to make this announcement today.

“Replacing the current gateline with more modern machines and changing the alignment will really help to reduce congestion through this area, which will be a real benefit for passengers and make travelling through Leeds station much more enjoyable.

“All of the upgrades taking place at the station will create a more reliable railway and will make sure that we can continue to meet the needs of the communities and economies that our railway serves.”

Steve Hopkinson, Regional Director at Northern, said: “It’s fantastic to see investment at Leeds station which will improve the environment for our customers.

“The improved gateline will make a significant difference and fit well with our own improvement programme.

“During 2019 our customers will see the introduction of our brand new trains, further refurbishment of our existing trains, and the removal of Pacers.”
