Major changes to services between Leicestershire and Derby as railway upgrade enters third week

Region & Route:
| Eastern

Network Rail, East Midlands Trains and CrossCountry are urging passengers travelling between Leicestershire and Derby to check before they travel as changes to services continue as part of the Derby Resignalling project.

The latest stage of the £200milion investment will see the track removed to the south of the station and reinstalled in a new, simpler layout. Platforms two to five are also being rebuilt so they align correctly with the new layout.

This work means that between Monday, 13 August and Sunday, 19 August inclusive, there will be no direct train services between Derby and stations to the south, including Loughborough, Leicester, Market Harborough and London St Pancras International.  Instead, a replacement coach service will be in operation between Derby station and East Midlands Parkway for onward train connections. Services between Nottingham and London St Pancras are not affected.

Passengers planning to travel to and from Derby station are urged to check their journey before they travel and to plan ahead. Full details of all the changes and replacement bus timetables are available in stations and from the dedicated website, derby2018.co.uk.

The Derby Resignalling project is a major upgrade to the track and signalling system at Derby railway station as part of the Midland Main Line Upgrade. Once completed, passengers will benefit from a more reliable and modern railway with reduced delays, providing better journeys for the four million passengers who use the station every year.

Kevin Newman, Senior Sponsor at Network Rail, said: “We are delighted with the progress that has been made on this once in a generation investment into the railway in Derby.

“We appreciate that this upgrade is impacting on services and we’d like to thank passengers for their continued patience whilst this project takes place and remind them to continue to check before they travel.

“This upgrade is part of the biggest investment into the Midland Main Line since the Victorian era and will provide a more modern and reliable railway for the millions of passengers who use the station every year.”

Jake Kelly, Managing Director at East Midlands Trains, said: “From Monday, 13 August there will be further changes to East Midlands Trains services as we will not be able to run any services south out of Derby station for one week. This affects our services to and from London St Pancras.

“During this week, we will provide a dedicated bus replacement service to and from East Midlands Parkway which will link in with train services travelling south to Leicester, London and other stations on the Midland Main Line.

“We will also continue to have additional staff, treats and help available in our stations to help customers as much as possible and timetables for the bus and trains services are available online at derby2018.co.uk and in stations."

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
