Weekend maintenance between Ipswich and Bury St Edmunds in December

Essential maintenance work is taking place on the railway between Ipswich and Bury St Edmunds during the weekend of 7th and 8th December so no train services will run between Ipswich and Bury St Edmunds.

Passengers wishing to travel on Greater Anglia services between Cambridge/Peterborough and Ipswich that weekend will be able to complete their journey using the replacement bus service, which will call at all stations between Ipswich and Bury St Edmunds, apart from Elmswell.

The work will replace the track ballast (the loose stone that keeps the sleepers in place) to improve drainage on the Ipswich line. There will be a temporary closure of Elmswell level crossing, so buses are unable to serve the station.

Passengers in the Elmswell area can use the car park at Stowmarket station free of charge for the weekend while the work is taking place.

Dean Mtunbi, project manager at Network Rail, said: “We’re upgrading the Ipswich line to provide a better, more efficient service for passengers.

“We want to give as much notice as possible of these essential works, so passengers can plan their journeys.

James Reeve, Greater Anglia’s Area Customer Service Manager, said: “We would like to thank customers for their patience and understanding while this work is carried out.

“Customers who would usually travel from Elmswell can park free of charge at Stowmarket station while the work is taking place. These customers should see a member of staff at Stowmarket and give them their car registration number on the day.”
