London Liverpool Street station lights up for our NHS heroes and railway family

London Liverpool Street station was lit-up blue and orange last night (Thursday 23 April) to show solidarity with key workers, including those at Network Rail, train operators and frontline NHS staff all across the country.

The outside of the UK’s third busiest station was lit in blue to salute the dedication and efforts of healthcare workers in the battle against the coronavirus. These change to orange lights as part of a cycle as a thank you to Network Rail’s employees at stations, signal boxes, operations centres, out on track, and behind the scenes, who keep the rail network running. The rail network is vital in distributing medical supplies, food and goods around the country as well as transporting key workers.

Inside, banners have been attached to the railings around the station that thank the many NHS workers for their incredible effort during the coronavirus outbreak and will be seen by NHS staff passing through the station.

Ellie Burrows, Network Rail’s route director for Anglia, said: “We wanted to do something that not only served as a thank you to our amazing healthcare workers, but also our staff from across the rail industry who are keeping the railway running, which is vital at this time.

“The combination of blue and orange lights represents how our railway family are working to support those on the front line and shows our solidarity with all key workers across the country.”

The illumination came as people throughout the country once again joined in a mass round of applause at 8pm on Thursday to thank NHS staff for their incredible work.
