London Euston passengers warned about reduced services during extreme heat

Region & Route:
North West & Central
| North West & Central: West Coast Mainline South

Passengers travelling to and from London Euston have been advised that train timetables will be reduced ahead of extremely hot weather.

The UK faces a period of sustained heat over the coming days, with peak temperatures reaching 37°C in some places and overnight temperatures upwards of 20°C. There will be a reduced timetable for trains in and out of London Euston from Tuesday 23 until Thursday 25 June, and passengers should expect the station to be extremely busy.

On Wednesday and Thursday – when the weather is most severe – passengers should only travel if absolutely necessary.

The Met Office has issued a rare red extreme heat warning for Wednesday 24 June and Thursday 25 June, with forecasters warning that June’s all-time daily temperature record could be broken. Rail services will continue to run, but passengers should expect disruption across the network.

For safety reasons, trains will operate at reduced speeds and to amended timetables, meaning journeys will take longer and there is a heightened risk of delays, cancellations and last-minute alterations.

Gary Walsh, Director for Network Rail's West Coast South route, said: “With weather warnings in place across the country for extreme hot weather, services in and out of London Euston will be reduced this week.

“We strongly advise customers to plan ahead, check their journeys, and only travel if absolutely necessary on the hottest days. If you do need to travel, please allow extra time and carry water to stay cool.

“We're working closely with our train operator partners to protect the reliability of the railway during the extreme heat. This includes running trains at slower speeds at some locations to keep people and our infrastructure safe."

London Euston has two new water fountains where passengers can fill their bottles for free to keep hydrated while on the move. The station's water fountains are located near the entrance to platforms 1-3.

Passengers are advised to check before they travel. More information is available via www.nationalrail.co.uk.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
