Landscape Photographer of the Year exhibition to turn Britain’s busiest railway station into art gallery

Region & Route:
National

Network Rail is to transform Britain’s busiest station into a multimedia art gallery this December, as London Waterloo plays host to the Landscape Photographer of the Year Awards exhibition.

With over 100m people using the station every year, Waterloo provides a perfect location to display the winning entries from the competition, showcasing the very best of British cities and countryside in the very heart of the capital.

Dozens of images of the winners and commended entries from this year's competition will be exhibited, including the winner of the 'Lines in the Landscape' award, which rewards the best image taken of Britain’s railway network. The photographs will appear on display stands across the station’s balcony and will also make an appearance on Motion@Waterloo, the largest single indoor screen in the UK, spanning 40m of the station between platforms 7 and 11.

The free exhibition will run for nine weeks from 1 December 2014 until 31 January 2015. The winners of all the awards will be announced in early November by the organisers Take a view.

Awards founder, Charlie Waite, said: "We are very excited that our long standing relationship with Network Rail has allowed us to work together to bring this unique experience to travellers and visitors alike. Our main stations are becoming much more than spaces to travel through and are offering cultural and retail experiences that can only be positive for everyone. Network Rail has spent a great deal of time making this event happen and we are extremely grateful for their vision. It is the first time that such an exhibition has taken place in Waterloo and the opportunity to exhibit the wonderful photography of our 2014 winners here is a privilege.

He added: "The Awards, this year, are being held in association with the VisitBritain Countryside is GREAT campaign that aims to tell the world that the British landscape is perfect for great experiences of all kinds. We hope that the huge number of people that pass through Waterloo, both regular commuters and visitors from home and overseas, will enjoy the photography of our talented winners and help to spread the word that Britain is a wonderful place to explore and photograph."

David Biggs, managing director, property at Network Rail said: “This competition celebrates something very special - the way this country looks from its coasts, cities and countryside - much of which can be viewed or visited by our rail network. Hosting this competition at the iconic Waterloo station lets us share these amazing images with the millions of people travelling through and using Britain’s busiest station. This is the first time we’ve hosted an exhibition of this type and it’s another step in making stations a destination for people to meet, eat and shop as well as use the train – and now they can see some of the finest landscape photography. We’re proud to support this exhibition and inspire people to travel and see the very best Britain has to offer.”

Notes to editors

*A small stand with a selection of previously commended entries ran in London Waterloo during 2013 but this is the first time that Network Rail and London Waterloo station has hosted the full competition exhibition. It has previously been held at the National Theatre, which is undergoing redevelopment.

All of the winning and commended photographs that appear in the exhibition can be found in the Awards book ‘Landscape Photographer of the Year: Collection 8’ by AA Publishing, which is available from 10th November 2014.www.take-a-view.co.uk

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
