Network Rail begins work to improve three level crossings in Staffordshire

Network Rail will begin work to improve three level crossings in Staffordshire this week, which will make sure they can continue to be used reliably for years to come.

Network Rail engineers will be replacing the old barrier gates and their components with new, modern ones at Caverswall level crossing in Stoke-on-Trent, Hockley level crossing in Uttoxeter and Alrewas level crossing in Lichfield.

Installing new, modern level crossing barriers will create a more resilient railway, help to reduce delays to services and mean that the level crossings remain fit for purpose.

In order for the work at each level crossing to be carried out safely, there will be changes to access for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.

The improvement work will take place during the following dates:

• Caverswall level crossing will be closed between Thursday, 27 February and Monday, 2 March. A clearly sign-posted diversionary route for motorists will be in place.

• Hockley level crossing will be closed between Wednesday, 4 March and Monday, 9 March. A clearly sign-posted diversionary route for motorists will be in place.
• Work will also take place Alrewas level crossing between Wednesday, 25 March and Monday, 30 March. Pedestrian access will be maintained during this time.

Vinny Briggs, Route Level Crossing Manager for Network Rail, said: “This is really important work to modernise these level crossings and make sure they remain fit for purpose.  

“The new barriers will improve the reliability of the level crossings in Staffordshire and therefore, help to reduce delays on the railway.

“We are working hard to minimise any disruption whilst this work takes place and would like to thank all those impacted for their patience.”
