Improved reliability for rail passengers at Clapton following track replacement

Vital track replacement work at Clapton that will increase reliability for passengers, has been completed at the weekend.

The engineering works took place at Clapton to replace four points (which allow trains to switch from one track to another), along with half a mile of track. This part of the railway allows services from London Liverpool Street to change to lines going to either Tottenham Hale or Chingford.

Just like road surfaces, track gets worn from constant use. Network Rail’s engineers carry out inspections and repairs regularly, but over time the track becomes so worn that a full replacement is the only option to avoid speed restrictions that cause delays and cancellations.

Follow-up works will take place on Sunday 16 and 30 August and passengers are advised to check service updates before they travel.

Ellie Burrows, Network Rail’s route director for Anglia, said: “We’ve replaced the track at this crucial point on the network to prevent delays and cancellations caused by track faults. Our maintenance work keeps the tracks and equipment working safely and reliably for passengers.”

Sunday 9 August

Track maintenance, level crossing upgrades and drainage work will continue on the Hertford East branch line on Sunday 9 August between Broxbourne and Hertford East. Additional maintenance work will take place between Stratford and Lea Bridge. 

 Services will be affected between:

• Liverpool Street and Tottenham Hale,
• Stratford to Meridian Water/Bishops Stortford,
• Liverpool Street to Hertford East

Stansted Express services will also be affected by these works. Passengers using these services are advised to check their journey before they travel at www.greateranglia.co.uk
