New images have been released showing how Bromley South station could look following a radical makeover which will bring long-lasting improvements for the tens of thousands of passengers who use it every day.

The work, which will be funded through the government's Access for All and national stations improvement programme, will focus on improving accessibility, modernising station facilities and providing a better end-to-end journey experience for passengers. Construction work is due to start in the Autumn, with step-free access provided in time for the London 2012 Olympics. It is hoped all other improvements can be completed in time for Summer 2012, however, subject to planning.

Dave Ward, Network Rail's route director for Kent, said: "We want to attract more people to use the railway. This means we need to give passengers the end-to-end journey experience they expect, including making the railway easier to access and providing a pleasant station environment and modern facilities.

“The proposed improvements at Bromley South will not only make a big difference for passengers in time for the Olympics, they will be a true legacy which will benefit future generations."

Bromley South is just one of more than 10 multi-billion-pound railway upgrades taking place in and around the capital before the Olympics. The enhancements at the station include:

- Two new lifts to provide step free access between the station entrance and platforms
- A new station frontage, including a striking glass entrance and block paved forecourt
- An enlarged booking hall and reduced clutter on the platforms to make it easier for passengers to move around, particularly during peak times
- Improvements to the existing staircases, including new handrails and anti-slip tread
- Refurbished toilets, including fully accessible toilet at platform level

Vince Lucas, service delivery director said, “Bromley South is one of our most important stations and has a large number of passengers using it every day. We are pleased that this work will be taking place and it can only help to encourage more people onto the railways. We will work with Network Rail to ensure that any disruption is kept to a minimum.”

Network Rail is planning to share the proposals with passengers and community representatives over the coming weeks, at which time feedback will be welcomed for consideration before plans are finalised.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
