Railway graffiti near Pitsea in Essex that threatened to spoil a happy couple’s special day was given the brush-off last week thanks to the efforts of Network Rail’s maintenance teams. The graffiti on Church Road bridge by St Margaret’s Church in Bowers Gifford could be seen on the route of bride-to-be Lauren Bromley’s wedding procession. Lauren, from Benfleet in Essex, contacted Network Rail’s National Helpline last week to see if anything could be done in time for her big day on Saturday 12 August. Network Rail’s maintenance teams were happy to say “I do” and pulled out all the stops to remove the graffiti in time to keep the nuptials on-track. Lauren, who wedded new husband Johnny Webb on Saturday, said: “I’m extremely grateful to Network Rail for everything they’ve done. We were worried the graffiti would spoil the view for our guests arriving at this lovely church so I am delighted they were able to help out so quickly.” Network Rail’s Territory Maintenance Director, David Wilks, said: “We are determined to tackle graffiti to help deliver a better railway for all users and improve the environment. I wish Lauren and Johnny every happiness together and I’m delighted that we were able to play a small part in their big day!” Network Rail spent £8 million last year on the removal of railway graffiti, and last month announced a further £8 million initiative to improve the visual appearance of the rail network by tackling graffiti and fly-tipping, and removing redundant buildings and train carriages. Graffiti and vandalism on the railway can be reported to Network Rail’s National Helpline on 08457 11 41 41.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
